When would I use a direct solenoid?

A direct acting solenoid is often a low-cost simple technology 0 bar differential solenoid valve used where a fast response time is required.

It lends itself to a choice of materials for the media and environmental application.

It will have a lower flow than a spool valve and may be limited in maximum pressure due to orifice/solenoid coil power rating.
