What is the difference between an inductive proximity sensor normally open (NO), normally closed (NC), and complementary (NO + NC) outputs?

The output signal of an NO sensor will close when an object is presented, and the output signal of an NC sensor will open when an object is presented. Sensors with complementary NO + NC outputs will both change state when an object is presented. Bear in mind that some sensors have a built-in timer to allow the output to be delayed.
