Why do some inductive proximity sensors have mechanical relay outputs instead of solid-state ones?

Each output type has advantages and disadvantages. When compared to solid state, the disadvantage for relay outputs are the contacts are slow and wear. However, the advantages are they're more capable of switching higher currents and can provide isolation between the load and the sensor circuits.
